License & FAQs
All of the graphics, GIMP & Photoshop brushes I give away here are 100% free to use for commercial purposes, as well as personal purposes.
EXAMPLES
Totally fine: You’re making a web template to sell online, or for a client, or for yourself. You want to use one of my brushes in the design. This is fine. Or you want to use one of my icon packs, and it would sure make it a lot easier on your buyers if you bundled the specific icons you used with the template, so you add those icons to your sale package. This is fine. No need to write me and ask. So, yes, my brushes and icons are free for commercial use and free for redistribution. Except when you use them in a way that is Not Cool.
Not Cool: You download my stuff, slap your own name on it, and sell it. Or, you download my stuff, leave my name on it, and sell it. Or, you download my stuff, leave my name on it, host it on your own site and offer it for download there.
In other words, I support artists, designers, students, learners, freelancers, small businesses and the curious. I don’t support people looking to make a quick buck off of someone else’s hard work.
Backlinks: I sure would like a backlink if you have the space, but let’s face it, most art looks better without linkery and clutter, so if backlinks are out of the question, instead, go ahead and email me a link to or copy of your artwork if possible. I’d love to see it!
If you’d like to help out, please consider a Paypal donation to djlaokai@gmail.com. You get a link to your website for 30 days, and I get a cup of coffee with extra whipped cream.
As far as my tutorials, blogs or articles go, please do not copy the content of my posts and post it elsewhere as your own content. If you’d like to syndicate my articles, please contact me and ask – I’m sure we can work something out. Quoting is OK.
Why don’t you have a comments section?
It’s simple, really: strapped for moderation time. Perhaps someday, when I’ve got a few moments to spare, I’ll enable the comments and let the trolls fall where they may.
How do I install your GIMP brushes?
Go to your GIMP directory, and find the Share > gimp > 2.0 > Brushes file, then paste all of the .gbr files included in my brush set into that directory. Then either re-start GIMP, or refresh the GIMP brushes palette to see and begin using the brushes.
How do I install your Photoshop brushes?
1) Close Photoshop
2) Navigate to Photoshop’s Presets > Brushes folder on your computer. You
can probably just search the C:/ (windows) or do a spotlight search (Mac)
for the folder “Brushes”.
On Windows Vista, the folder is located at C:/Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop CS3/Presets/Brushes
When you find this file, copy the .abr file you downloaded from my site into it.
3) Restart Photoshop, and you’ll be able to use them.
Why do you give stuff away?
a) It’s good personal promotion, b) I enjoy it and c) I’m going to mess around with my graphics programs anyway, I might as well have a specific goal in doing so. I also tend to end up with piles of extra design elements on my HD, project chaff that would never see the light of day unless I package them up and hand them out.
Do you have a release schedule?
Nope. I release when I’m inspired, and when I have something worthwhile to pass along. Sometimes I go for months without putting anything up, sometimes it’s every few days.
